Acne is a multifactorial disease affecting the pilosebaceous units of the skin. Each unit consists of a large, multilobed sebaceous gland, a rudimentary hair and a wide follicular canal lined with stratified squamous epithelium. Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial disease with a seborrhoeic basis. Acne tends to appear during puberty and tends to fade away again, usually spontaneously when growth has stopped. Blackhead disease causes high mortality in turkeys, sometimes approaching 100% of a flock. In chickens, the mortality may be 10%–20% with high morbidity, although many outbreaks pass unnoticed.

Moreover, as a general rule, it is desirable to avoid oral therapy in the treatment of skin diseases whenever an effective topical treatment modality is available. Exposed Acne Treatment is one such system which is known to be very effective in treating acne over the counter. Compositions, which are suitable for topical administration and which comprise benzoylperoxide in combination with, for example, erythromycin. Since it occurs primarily in the face and trunk areas of the body, the condition probably causes more mental pain and anguish than many other diseases which have an affect on an individual's physical appearance. Two types of skin lesions are observed in acne vulgaris: (1) non-inflammatory lesions which include open (blackhead) and closed (whitehead) comedones and (2) inflammatory lesions which include papules and pustules.

Extractors work well with open pores, but closed pores that contain debris are best dealt with patiently by using a gentle facial cleanser or scrub after a steam treatment. The pores will open and a little, slight pressure may yield the stubborn material. Getting rid of blackheads is relatively easy, however conventional treatments of pore strips, scrubs and facials will not work, except to temporarily extract the contents. Blackheads are caused from a build up of sebum (oil) in the skin pores and blockage of the pore with exfoliated dead skin cells. The grainy salt will make a scrub out of the mixture. Scrub this on the face for five minutes everyday.
